There’s a moment every business owner has. You pull up your own website, squint at it, and think, “We need a whole new site.”
Sometimes that’s true. But a lot of the time, a redesign is like buying a new truck because the tires are bald. The fix might be a lot simpler (and cheaper) than you think.
Before you tear the whole thing down, make sure your site has these basics covered.
1. It loads fast
People are impatient, especially on a phone with two bars of signal somewhere outside Hill City. If your site takes forever to load, visitors bail before they ever see how good it looks.
The usual culprits are oversized photos, too many plugins, and cheap hosting. All fixable without starting over. You can check your speed for free with Google’s PageSpeed Insights.
2. It works great on a phone
Most local searches happen on mobile. Pull your site up on your own phone and be honest. Can you read the text without pinching? Can you tap the buttons without hitting the wrong one? Is your phone number one tap away?
If the answer is no, that’s priority number one.
3. People can tell what you do in five seconds
Land on your homepage as if you’ve never heard of your business. Within a few seconds, a visitor should know:
- What you do
- Where you do it
- How to get in touch
“Quality You Can Trust” sounds nice, but it doesn’t tell anyone you install fences in Rapid City. Clear beats clever every time.
4. There’s an obvious next step
Every page should point somewhere: call now, request a quote, book a table, schedule a visit. If visitors have to hunt for how to reach you, many won’t bother. A clear, repeated call to action can make a bigger difference than any new color scheme.
5. The information is actually current
Old hours. A staff page with people who left two years ago. A “Summer 2023 Special” still on the homepage. These small things quietly tell visitors you might not be paying attention. A content refresh can make an old site feel brand new.
6. Google can find and understand it
A beautiful site that nobody finds is just an expensive brochure in a drawer. Basic SEO helps your pages show up when people search:
- Each page has a clear title and description
- Your service pages say what you do and where (“roof repair in Rapid City”)
- Your business name, address, and phone match everywhere online
- The site is connected to Google Search Console
7. You can see what’s working
If you don’t have analytics set up, you’re flying blind. Tools like Google Analytics show where visitors come from, which pages they read, and where they leave. That data tells you exactly what to fix, instead of guessing.
So when do you actually need a redesign?
A full rebuild makes sense when the foundation is the problem. That usually looks like:
- The site is built on outdated tech that can’t be updated or secured
- You can’t make simple edits without calling a developer
- Your business has changed so much the site no longer fits what you do
- You’ve fixed the basics above, and it’s still not bringing in leads
If none of that sounds like you, a tune-up might be all you need.
The bottom line
A new look feels exciting, but customers care more about speed, clarity, and how easy it is to reach you. Fix the fundamentals first. Then, if you still need a redesign, you’ll go into it knowing exactly what the new site has to do.
